Schréder Australia group of companies – which include Sylvania Schréder, Austube Schréder, and SCS is the local leading independent outdoor and customised indoor lighting solution provider, we believe that lighting can empower people, impact lives, support communities, and transform spaces, cities, and the planet.

The Schréder Group is the leading independent outdoor lighting manufacturer in the world with more than 2 million lighting points sold per year. The company is present in more than 70 countries. The company’s ambition is to bring meaningful moments to people in public spaces by enhancing safety, well-being and sustainability. As such, Schréder’s Experts in Lightability™ work with customers to co-create smart lighting solutions for spaces that benefit people, the community and the planet.

Schréder was founded in 1907 in Liège, Belgium as a family-owned company. At the turn of the 20th century, electricity was the new promising technology. During the company’s first few decades, it explored the possibilities of this technology, innovating and manufacturing a variety of electrical equipment until it started to design and manufacture outdoor lighting products. From the very beginning, driven by a sense of purpose and adventure, Schréder expanded internationally through joint ventures across Europe and beyond. Over time, Schréder established a direct sales model worldwide, building with local experts and partners, and in close collaboration with cities. This proximity inspires innovation and enables Schréder to adapt its product portfolio to meet local needs better than others. To adapt to an increasingly globalised world, the Schréder Group reorganised its supply chain and industrial footprint to maintain production close to its customers. The Group’s

manufacturing plants supply the regional or continental markets where they are located to better serve its customers and contribute positively to the local social fabric and environmental preservation. In addition to our extensive portfolio of luminaires, we develop cutting-edge connected lighting systems. These new systems enable the optimal use of light to further reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint, and also provide a platform to add innovative new features such as traffic and pollution sensors to improve the quality of life for citizens. More than ever, Schréder’s DNA of innovation provides significant added value to cities for managing smarter, more efficient and more sustainable public spaces. At Schréder, this is called Lightability™. Schréder is without a doubt a key partner for the city and the mobility of tomorrow.

When light makes the difference As Australia’s population increases and governments endeavour to limit urban sprawl via consolidation of our cities and suburbs, congestion on our road networks is building. In turn, reliance on tunnels and underpasses to improve traffic flow is set to continue. Why do we need Tunnel / Underpass lighting? To ensure drivers can approach, pass through and exit the tunnel or underpass with a degree of safety commensurate to that of the approach road. Unlike an uncovered road the approaching driver’s adaptation level is significantly higher in comparison to the lighting level within the tunnel and therefore limits the driver’s ability to view the road surface, surrounds and other objects. This phenomenon is generally known as the “black hole” effect. How much light is required? In principle, the lighting level required within the tunnel entrance (threshold zone) is determined by the luminance at the portal. After the threshold zone the lighting level within the tunnel or underpass is gradually reduced in unison with the driver’s adaptation level. Best practice approach To date, Australia’s major tunnel installations have incorporated a best practice approach, where basic daytime and night-time lighting is achieved with a continuous row of fluorescent luminaires installed throughout the entire length of the tunnel. Supplementary boost lighting is then provided at the entrance, transition and exit zones to cater for changes in ambient light levels throughout the day. The benefits of this system are excellent visual guidance, uniform appearance and minimisation of annoying flicker and glare. This approach is now changing due to the higher capital and maintenance cost of a continuous lighting system in comparison to a discrete lighting solution. Whilst a discrete system provides significant savings in capital and maintenance and therefore is desirable from a cost point of view, there are a number of challenges to overcome at the design or specification stage. Apart from compliance to the nominal lighting technical parameters designers need to consider the overall visual effect as well as other factors to ensure the long term success of this type of installation.

Illuminating tunnels

Tunnels are an ideal application of LED technology. The extremely long life of light emitting diodes mean that the luminaires are maintenance free for at least 10 years. Optical chambers can be sealed to a high IP rating so that high lumen maintenance factors can be attained. Road safety is improved through the use of high colour rendering white light, improving visibility of the tunnel walls and line markings, as well as other vehicles. As well as using high quality LED chips, our range of tunnel optics are highly efficient as opposed to traditional lighting technology, saving up to 70% in energy usage. An extensive range of optical distributions in Sylvania products allow the light to be directed in perfect balance to the walls and the road surface, thus minimising waste and efficiency. Our tunnel offering includes LED luminaires available for continuous and discrete lighting configurations. Close interaction between our onsite product development facility and light engineering design team ensures a high quality energy efficient lighting system is provided for every installation. In addition, the tunnel range is ready to be connected to a range of control systems. Luminaires can be dimmed to achieve smooth transitions between zones, thus eliminating obvious changes in light levels. DALI is used extensively and provides two-way communication to every luminaire. A range of connection systems are also available to simplify the installation process, saving hours during tunnel construction.

Sustainability in our everyday business

The principle of our family company Schréder, is to hand it over from generation to generation, with each generation contributing to making the business and its surrounding communities healthier and better. Our commitment to sustainability is based on this next-generation thinking: we continually innovate and change the way we look at the world through entrepreneurship. From energy efficiency at the advent of electricity to creating solutions that are more resilient in the age of data, we constantly adapt our sustainability policy to help customers face their bigger challenges.

Together for our Future

Based on the materiality assessment, we developed a cohesive, company-wide sustainability strategy. We called it the “Together for our Future” project and launched it in early 2020. The project is structured around three axes encompassing the relevant and prioritised SDGs and targets.

For our people Being responsible for our people by developing human growth through diversity and respect of human rights

Focus areas • Gender diversity • Human rights

For our planet

Being responsible for our planet by reducing our own and our customers’ environmental impact

For our community Being responsible for our community by having a resolutely positive impact on society through our solutions Focus areas • Lighting with a positive social impact

Focus areas • Company carbon footprint • Energy efficiency of our luminaires

• Respect of fauna and flora ecosystems

• Circular economy

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals The United Nations adopted its 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on 25th September 2015. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a global call to action to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people live in peace and prosperity. Our sustainability strategy was built to make a positive contribution to achieving the SDGs.

Together for a circular economy

With transparent criteria to assess our products, the Circle Light Label helps cities and industries adopt a circular economy and drive a positive future for all.

extracting raw materials

A circular economy is mainly defined in opposition to the traditional linear economy: take, make and dispose. In a circular economy, products are part of a value stream where they will be used for as long as possible. Then, depending on their characteristics, they can be reused, refurbished, upgraded or recycled. This leads to increased efficiency, reduced operating costs, greater resilience and a smaller ecological footprint. Benefits of a circular economy

It's in the DNA

Schréder has always designed products and services with sustainability in mind - it's simply what we do. Indeed, many of the lighting solutions we installed back in the 1970s are still working. We take the circular economy into account, right from the offset. From the concept phase, design guidelines not only take into account the production and

environmental impact of our luminaires. They facilitate removing components and

increasing the standardisation of parts and the materials separability once its working life is over.

A more sustainable, brighter future is a priority for everyone. At Schréder, we have always developed responsible lighting solutions to preserve and enhance landscapes. The Circle Light Label provides design guidelines to challenge our R&D team further for the community's benefit.

Circle Light

In this constant quest to innovate and be completely transparent with our customers, we launched the Circle Light Label. It designates products that are optimised for a circular economy without compromising on the quality. We assess our luminaires to evaluate their potential circularity through 12 objective criteria in 5 categories:

SELIGO

FLEXIA

The luminaires are rated with a comparative scale from 1 star (least circular) to 4 stars (most circular). To support our customers in making an informed choice and developing a truly circular economy, only luminaires with 4 stars are promoted by us with a Circle Light Label.
