Schréder today

Sustainability has always been one of Schréder’s four fundamental values. We have built our reputation while minimising our ecological footprint and those of our customers.

What does Schréder already do for the planet?

Long-lasting product Throughout our history, our products have always been engineered to last over time. Water, dust, impacts, vibrations, heat, wind, … everything is measured and tested to ensure that our luminaires withstand the harshest climatic and environmental conditions with the longest possible lifetime.

Technology The greatest impact of a luminaire, from an environmental point of view, lies in its operating phase, and more specifically, in the amount of energy consumed. Schréder is constantly developing new technologies to reduce energy consumption to a minimum (LED technology, optimised optics, control solutions, solar panels…).

Product design Our in-house R&D engineers are constantly working on product design to reduce the volume of materials used. Luminaires are more compact and the thickness of the casings has been decreased while remaining robust. Furthermore, we are committed to maximising the use of eco-friendly materials such as glass and second-hand aluminium castings.

Recycling Every Schréder subsidiary has a local partnership to arrange the collection, storage, transport and end-of-life treatment of lighting products in accordance with the law and local regulations. These partnerships make sure that the luminaire components are recovered to close the material loop. Moreover, Schréder can share what can be recycled and what can be done with the discarded elements.

Information To provide all of our customers with clear information on the environmental impact of each luminaire, Schréder has developed a life cycle analysis tool (Instant LCA) in collaboration with an independent agency (in accordance with the principles of ISO 14040: 2006). The results are available in the Product Environmental Profile (PEP).

Factory All of our factories are certified ISO 14001:2015 which recognises their efforts for their environmental management system. For each factory, a plan to improve resource efficiency and waste management has been established and is put into action by the quality manager.

What is next? Many of the lighting solutions we installed back in the 1970s are still working. We’re proud of that but, for the well-being our planet, we need to go a step further. Living well within the limits of our planet is one of our objectives and for this, we are integrating another concept under our sustainability umbrella: circularity.

What is circularity? Circularity aims to concentrate mainly on the “planet” and “profit” aspects of sustainability. It focuses on reducing the environmental burden by valorising the flow of all materials. It is mainly defined in opposition to the traditional linear economy: take, make and dispose. In a circular economy, products are designed and developed as part of a value network where they will be used for as long as possible. Then, depending on their characteristics, they can be reused, refurbished, upgraded or recycled. The circular economy is typically described in terms of four concentric loops. Inner circles describe high value activities and processes and moving towards the outer circles residual value is extracted until a product is recycled.

Our strategic plan for Circular Economy

Develop products with the lowest environmental impact and be transparent about it.

Schréder’s Circular Actions

Product’s DNA • Schréder is aware that circular economy needs to be taken in account from the design stage of the luminaire. A product range is currently being developed in which circularity is fully incorporated into the luminaires’ DNA. From the concept phase, future evolutions (maintenance, upgrades, etc.) and recycling are taken into account with design guidelines that facilitate the removal of components and increase the standardisation of parts and the materials separability. Retrofit kit • Technology is evolving very quickly. Some luminaires installed 10 years ago are already outdated in terms of electronic components yet their housings are still in good condition. To solve this issue, we have developed different retrofit solutions (photometric and electronic) to insert into existing luminaires. This enables towns and cities to benefit from the latest technology at a reduced environmental cost as only obsolete components need to be replaced.

Circle Light Label • After a careful analysis of the potential circularity of our luminaires, we decided to introduce a “circular lighting”

product label. This label acts as a circular indicator for our customers. It clearly designates products that are optimised for circular economy through 12 objective criteria.

Service app • To promote the longest service life for our luminaires, we are developing a smart label program. Every step of the product lifecycle has been taken into account to provide customers with the right information and support at the right moment. Thanks to this new app, maintenance will become much easier as the specifications of the product and a list of its spare parts can be accessed at all times (with no need for a control system). Upgrades will be recommended to maintain efficiency and performance at a maximum and much more.
