Time to get back on the rails

Every train journey begins and ends in a station. The impression that railway stations leave on a traveller impacts their view of the whole rail network. Train stations also act as gateways to a new area. They are often the first experience that a traveller gets of a village, town or city. Today, railway stations operate around the clock and a modernisation programme is making railway stations fit for the 21 st century, improving the passenger environment and looking to use cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways to enable travellers to begin and complete journeys. Rising fuel prices, the growing problem of road congestion and the need to move towards sustainability make rail more than ever the most appropriate means of transport. It is the way forward for the government and its plan “Decarbonising transport: a better, greener Britain”. High quality, yet energy-efficient and low-maintenance lighting provides a strategic asset for the development of a sustainable and beneficial railway infrastructure.

About Schréder and Urbis Schréder Who is Schréder ?

For more than 115 years, Schréder, an independent, family-owned company, has dedicated itself to exploring everything there is about the potential of light, constantly pushing the boundaries of technological innovations.

Expertise, passion, innovation, and sustainability drive 2,600+ employees to use the power of light for the safety and well-being of all, from public spaces to higher-risk environments, such as railway stations, commuter routes and car parks where the consequences of a dark or dimly lit area can lead to injuries.

6

Urbis Schréder: leading where others follow Based in Basingstoke, Urbis Schréder has been delivering high quality lighting since 1977. It is now one of the UK’s largest suppliers of street lighting and exterior decorative lighting equipment.

High technical quality and aesthetic design is at the heart of the company’s philosophy and this, coupled with exceptional levels of customer focus, has led Urbis Schréder to develop the most cost effective, energy efficient, lighting innovations for the rail market in the UK.

The ability to make a real difference in the spaces we light, to stretch the boundaries of what is possible, to delight our customers is what makes us unique. It is what makes us Experts in Lightability™.

7

Why Urbis Schréder ? Urbis Schréder’s wide range of lighting solutions for the rail industry, combined with the company’s expertise and outstanding heritage in delivering break through projects, creates the best possible experience for passengers and staff in the station environment.

New technology offers the rail industry the ability to improve station lighting and significantly reduce cost. By combining traditional street lighting, LED handrails, continuous tiled lighting and ground level inclination lighting; it is possible to create a bright and effective environment. The improved visibility reduces the risk of crime in a station environment and increases passenger confidence.

Critical to delivering a safe and pleasant passenger experience inside and in the vicinity of a station is appropriate lighting solutions.

8

Sustainability Sustainability has been a topic close to the hearts of the Schréder family shareholders for generations and is strongly anchored in our company’s mission statement.

• In 2019, we formalised this commitment by conducting our first materiality assessment. Based on the materiality assessment, we developed a cohesive, company-wide sustainability strategy. We called it the “Together for our Future” project and launched it in early 2020. The project is structured around three axes encompassing the relevant and prioritised SDGs and targets:

• Together for Our Planet • Together for Our People • Together for Our Community

EcoVadis

To monitor our sustainability performance and verify its alignment of our strategy and actions with external standards, we have carried out annual assessments of our performance through the EcoVadis platform since 2019. Schréder has been awarded a Gold in sustainability rating for the second time, with a score of 71 out of 100 points in 2023. This rating places Schréder in the top 5% of global suppliers across all industries and recognises our continuous progress in all areas with a special focus on our SBTi commitment to reduce our CO2 emissions.

Control solutions

Connecting your luminaires isn’t just about integrating a control system; it’s about enhancing the entire environment. In rail settings, lighting must do more than just illuminate—it should enhance safety, improve the user experience, and support broader infrastructure needs like electric mobility, security, and information systems. Are your lights tailored to the specific needs of each area? Will they help reduce crime, attract more users, or adjust to different conditions, like dimming during off-peak hours but brightening instantly in emergencies? By considering all these factors—space, people, lighting, and control—you can create a more efficient, sustainable, and responsive lighting solution.

Connecting your luminaires is much more than adding a control system to the products. It is about customising an area to unleash its full potential.

Let’s get connected and transform your rail environment!
