1. The Right Light: Where, When and Why

Preservation of Biodiversity With the United Nations predicting that 68% of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2050, it is estimated that an additional 460,000 square miles of our planet will be urbanised. This rapid expansion highlights the urgent need to develop cities that coexist harmoniously with nature, preserving critical habitats and supporting biodiversity alongside human infrastructure. Artificial lighting plays a vital role in ensuring safety and enhancing quality of life in cities. However, excessive or poorly directed lighting can disrupt ecosystems, especially at night. Harsh, bright light can turn night into day, disturbing the circadian rhythms of both people and animals. For nocturnal species - such as bats, insects and other wildlife - this disruption can be particularly harmful, affecting their feeding, navigation and reproductive behaviour. At Schréder, we take this challenge seriously. Our approach to lighting prioritises the safety and well-being of people while minimising the impact on the natural environment. We achieve this by incorporating advanced features such as connected dimmers, sensors, and optics that allow precise control of the light intensity, direction and colour temperature.

With the right lighting, urban spaces can become vibrant, inclusive, and safe environments that foster connection and well-being. However, poorly managed lighting can lead to light pollution that disrupts ecosystems, obscures the night sky and affects both wildlife and human health. At Schréder, we are committed to designing lighting solutions that support urban life while preserving the natural environment. Our luminaires are equipped with precision- engineered optics that direct light only where it is needed - downwards and with minimal spill - to reduce unnecessary light trespass and skyglow. We have long prioritised optical performance as a key strategy to minimise light pollution without compromising safety or visibility. Our solutions also integrate smart technologies such as dimming to reduce light levels during off- peak hours. For even greater adaptability, we offer luminaires with FlexiWhite technology - tunable white light that can be adjusted throughout the day to match natural circadian rhythms. This allows brighter, cooler light to support activity in the morning and during the day and warmer, amber tones in the evening to protect biodiversity and promote a more restful nightscape. By combining thoughtful design with advanced lighting control, we help cities and communities reduce their environmental impact while creating spaces that are healthier, safer and more sustainable for everyone.
